Butterflies!!!

For Christmas Aunt Jennifer gave the girls a Butterfly Kit. I honestly had forgotten about it but Kendall pulled it out of the arts and crafts closet a couple of weeks ago so I sent off for the caterpillars. A couple of days later a small box appears on the front porch with two small cups of caterpillars.

Here are the cups after a few days with 10 small caterpillars.

You leave them in the cup until they turn into a chrysalis. It was truly amazing to watch the caterpillars grow from day to day. The caterpillars quadruple in size from day 1 to when they start to turn into a chrysalis.

This picture is when they were all almost in a chrysalis.

Once they have turned into a chrysalis you take them out of the cups and pin them on the side on the butterfly garden.

It is hard to see but they are pinned up on each side on the net. We had 9 chrysalis' in all.

Then you wait for them to open up. When they first open they look like moths because their wings have to dry and open up.

After about 6 or 7 days we had 9 butterflies!!

You can see them on the sides of the net.

We keep them for about 5 days and then left them go!

Daddy had to "help" one of them fly over the fence because its wings didn't fully form but other than that all of them were beautiful.

This whole experience was amazing. The girls learned so much and had so much fun checking on them everyday and feeding them.
